This layer presents the named hydrographic network of the Amazon area, obtained through specialized queries to the collaborative OpenStreetMap (OSM) database and subsequently clipped to the Amazonia Forever work area. This layer does not represent all rivers and streams in the Amazon region, but only the most well-known and widely shared through the collaborative OSM platform. Due to strong seasonal and inter-annual variability, rivers and streams can change vertically within the year and, more slowly, horizontally across years, which makes mapping the entire network in the Amazon a significant challenge.
Data was extracted from OpenStreetMap using Overpass API queries, specifically targeted to obtain "waterway" elements classified as "river" and "stream" that possess the "name" attribute. Processing included retaining only the river name field while maintaining the original vector geometry. The query was executed with a 600-second timeout to ensure complete data extraction.
The layer includes linear geometries (polylines) of rivers and streams that have official or locally recognized names, with the main attribute being the water course name. It comprises both major rivers and smaller tributaries and streams that have been mapped by the OSM contributor community.
Data accuracy and completeness depends on collaborative contribution from the OpenStreetMap community. It is important to consider that, being crowdsourced data, there may be omissions or errors that can be corrected through participation in the openstreetmap.org project. Geographic coverage is limited to the work area defined by Amazonia Forever 360+.
