This layer displays the spatial distribution of Indigenous languages in Amazonia, based on RAISG-defined territorial boundaries. It uses a simplified set of 265 Indigenous language polygons—originally sourced and refined from Native Land Digital (Native-Land.ca), extracted on July 15th of 2025, and applies geometric simplification and conversion to multigeometries, removing bridge connections for clarity.
The result is a visualization that captures linguistic diversity across the region, offering a complementary perspective to the full, unsimplified language polygon dataset.
By showing the presence of each language at the local level without aggregation or language counts, this layer enables researchers, policymakers, and territorial managers to observe patterns of linguistic distribution across Amazonia. It supports regional analysis and facilitates efforts related to cultural preservation, governance, and social planning within this complex sociolinguistic landscape. It is particularly useful for identifying multilingual zones, areas of potential cultural vulnerability, and regions where governance intersects with diverse language communities.
It is important to note that due to the complexity and limited study of the Amazon Region, some languages—especially those of uncontacted peoples—may be missing or underrepresented, and others may be sparsely used today.
