Description:

The U.S. Census Urban Area Code that the section of the roadway is within. Codes are based on the 2023 adjusted urban area boundary, which is an expansion of the 2020 urban areas identified by the U.S. Census Bureau but adjusted, or smoothed, to suite transportation planning needs. Any areas outside of an adjusted urban boundary are considered rural and coded 99999.

Some roadways may be coded 99998. These are small urban areas, which are urban areas with a population between 5,000 and 49,999. While the US Census Bureau no longer uses the small urban area designation, the Federal Highway Administration still requires these codes be used when submitting the Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS) federal report.

Reported Extent: Required for all roads eligible for federal aid, including ramps, and optionally available for all other public roads. Federal aid-eligible roads include urban roads classified as minor collectors or above (functional system 1-6) and rural roads classified as major collectors or above (function system 1-5).
