Description:

Classification indicating the grade of a roadway, or how much a road changes in elevation. Grade is measured using class codes A to F to identify the percent grade. Refer to the HPMS Field Manual, item 45 for more details.

Important: This event layer has not been maintained or updated since 2020. Routes that have been added or altered since that time will not have reliable data.

Reported Extent: All paved principle and minor arterials (Functional System 1-4) that are included in sample panel sections and optional for other roadways. Sample panel sections are any roadways, or parts of roadways, that were identified by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) as requiring additional data to be reported in the 2024 HPMS report.
