Description:

Curbs are stone or concrete edging along a road. Gutters are designed to allow the flow of water into sewer systems.

Reported Extent: All public roads. Curbs and gutters are coded differently for undivided and divided highways.

For undivided highways, where there is no physical barrier between opposing lanes of traffic, the location of curbs and gutters are recorded only on the cardinal direction roadway. In this case, a curb or gutter located on the 'right' side of the road indicates a feature on the right shoulder of the cardinal roadway. Curbs or gutters on the 'left' side of the road indicate features on the right shoulder of the opposing traffic lanes (i.e. non-cardinal roadway).

For divided highways, curbs and gutters are recorded on both the cardinal and non-cardinal roadway records. In this case, on the cardinal roadway, a curb or gutter recorded on the 'right' side indicates a feature on the right-shoulder of the cardinal-direction roadway while a curb or gutter on the 'left' side indicates a feature on the left shoulder of the cardinal-direction roadway. The same is true for the non-cardinal direction roadway. Note: cardinal direction refers to the direction of increasing mileposts.
