The protection of the CCPA is important as it ensures forest conservation, the protection of invaluable water sources and biodiversity, preservation and improvement of traditional livelihoods and the creation of new economic opportunities from heritage, health and wellness tourism and eco-tourism. This protected area aims to provide protection from activities harmful to the environment which includes, but is not limited to mining and will support the sustainable use of the key hydrological, ecological and cultural systems contained within the declared boundary. These resources include forest cover, rivers, caves and othe hydrogical features, flora and fauna, heritage and cultural sites.
To ensure the effective management of the area in recognition of the rights of private landowners, the Government of Jamaica intends to partner with private landowners, local groups and other stakeholders, in the development of a comprehensive management plan for the area. A management plan is to be prepared by the National Environment and Planning Agency which will be shared amongst key stakeholders for input and will then be subject to Natural Resources Conservation Authority approval.
