High use areas were developed for ocean planning uses. These areas were created using the species density models that were created from the GOMMAPPS line transect surveys. WHile the SDMs encompass the Gulf as a region, these high use areas were limited to US territorial waters. the maximum across all predicted monthly densities was selected for each spatial cell. Each spatial cell was then coded as being above or below the median of the distribution of these maximum densities to identify high use areas. More information on how these high use areas were developed, and how they can be used in ocean planning can be found in “ Protected species considerations for ocean planning: A case study for offshore wind energy development in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico” (Farmer et al. 2023.)
