Historic churches, \nschools, business, and homes were erased due to the 1960s Urban Renewal \nefforts. Early communities lost their homes and financial stability due \nto unjust laws and economic despair that impacted African American \ncommunities.  Many of the locations on this tour are not active, are now\n on private property, are no longer standing and/or the original \nstructures that have undergone major renovations. Our tours reflect \nthese losses.\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/div\u003e\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr /\u003e\u003c/div\u003e\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan style='font-weight:bold;'\u003ePurpose:\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/div\u003e\u003cdiv\u003eThe\n Roots Run Deep tours aim to educate the public, locals and tourists \nalike, of the existence and cultural impact of African American \ncommunities throughout the Shenandoah Valley. In addition, Shenandoah \nValley Black Heritage Project hopes to preserve and protect historical \nsites, burial grounds, churches and communities from destruction \nassociated with careless or uncaring development.\u003c/div\u003e\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr /\u003e\u003c/div\u003e\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan style='font-weight:bold;'\u003eSource:\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/div\u003e\u003cdiv\u003eData\n for the Roots Run Deep tours was collected by Shenandoah Valley Black \nHeritage Project staff, as well as contracted community researchers and \nvolunteers. Contributors and researchers include: Rocktown History/Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society, Sarah Bixler of the Lincoln Homestead, Pat Turner Ritchie, and Charity Derrow.
