<idPurp>This layer describes locations of stream and river crossings of the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline. The route described was filed with FERC on 5/26/2017.</idPurp>
        <idAbs>
If constructed, the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline will impact hundreds of streams and rivers as it traverses the steep mountain terrain of Appalachia and heads toward the coastal lowlands. Many of these are first and second-order streams that provide high quality habitat for native trout and other aquatic species. In addition, these streams form the headwaters of rivers that millions in Virginia, Maryland and Washington D.C. use for drinking water and recreation.

In a few cases, Dominion would be forced to use Horizontal Directional Drilling to bore under larger or protected rivers, such as the James River that separates Nelson and Buckingham counties in central Virginia. But in most cases, backhoes and other heavy equipment will be used to dig and dredge a trench across the stream or river, wide enough to maneuver the pipe while laying it and deep enough to cover it with fill material for protection. Where the river bottom is bedrock, Dominion will blast their trench with high explosives and then dig out the debris.

Needless to say, all of this will be highly polluting with regard to suspended sediment, which can change the character of the riverbed far downstream and for long periods of time. Waste products from explosives, such as benzene, toluene, ammonia and other toxic substances will be introduced into the water column whenever blasting is required. Any aquatic life downstream will doubtlessly be impacted. Those in the immediate vicinity will likely be killed outright from suffocation or shock.

This layer shows the locations of proposed river crossings such that we may better characterize the local environments and the streams themselves to get a better idea of the habitat they provide and the species that they harbor.

This layer was created by intersecting the ACP Pipeline Route centerline with the National Hydrography Dataset (1:24000) flowline layer.
</idAbs>
