Service Description: The Peel Extreme Heat Vulnerability Index (EHVI) is a tool designed by Peel Public Health to identify areas and populations within Peel Region that are most vulnerable to extreme heat events. The Peel EHVI was calculated by combining several key factors, grouped into three main categories, that contribute to heat vulnerability. The categories were:
• Exposure: This measures the severity and frequency of extreme heat events in each area. It includes data on temperature, tree canopy coverage, and the NVDI.
• Sensitivity: This reflects the characteristics of the population that make them more susceptible to heat. It includes demographics such as age (seniors) and pre-existing health conditions.
• Adaptive Capacity: This assesses the ability of individuals and communities to cope with extreme heat. It includes factors like access to income, those who live alone, and renters, who have less control over the cooling resources (air conditioning) available in their dwellings.
Each of these categories was assigned a score based on various data sources and statistical methods. These scores are then combined to produce an overall vulnerability score for different geographic areas within Peel. We can leverage the Peel EHVI to enhance our heat resilience by prioritizing resources and targeting interventions; utilizing the tool in urban planning; educating the public; investing in infrastructure; and prepare for emergencies. By using the EHVI, communities can create a more resilient environment that better protects residents from the dangers of extreme heat.
